How to make a barcode

Pick a barcode type, type your value, and the barcode redraws as you type. For UPC, EAN and ITF-14 you can leave off the last digit and the check digit is worked out for you; if you type the whole number, the check digit is checked and you'll see a clear message if it's wrong. Then download a PNG for documents and label software, an SVG for print design (it stays sharp at any size), or print it straight from the page.

Which barcode should I use?

• UPC-A or EAN-13 for products sold in shops, using a number licensed from GS1. UPC-A is the 12-digit version common in the US and Canada; EAN-13 is the 13-digit version used most other places. US scanners read both.
• Code 128 for your own use: inventory, asset tags, shipping references, anything with letters and numbers. It is compact and packs long runs of digits especially tightly.
• Code 39 when an older system or a customer's spec calls for it. It only has capital letters, digits and a few symbols, and makes wider barcodes.
• ITF-14 for the outer carton or case of a product, using its 14-digit GTIN.

Getting a barcode to scan

Print black on white, keep the quiet zone (the blank margin at each side), and don't squash the height much. Larger bars scan more easily; 0.33 mm is the standard bar width for UPC and EAN. Test a printed barcode with the scanner or phone app that will actually read it before printing hundreds.

About the numbers: this tool draws a barcode for a number you already have. It does not issue product numbers. UPC and EAN numbers for products sold in stores come from GS1 (in the US, GS1 US), which licenses a company prefix to each brand. A number you make up yourself will scan, but it isn't registered to you, and retailers and marketplaces that check GS1 data may reject it.
